Per Vasmer, of unclear etymology, and not obviously related to пита́ть (pitátʹ, to feed), пи́ща (píšča, food).

  1. (colloquial) to overfeed (usually forcibly or against someone's desires)
  2. (colloquial, transitive) to overdose, to give too much medicine to (someone)
