Etymology
Borrowed from Old Church Slavonic пламꙑ (plamy, “flame”), from Proto-Slavic *polmy (“flame”). Doublet of по́лымя (pólymja) and по́ломя (pólomja), the inherited East Slavic forms.
Cognate with Lithuanian pelenaĩ (“ashes”), plė́nis (“speck, fine ashes”), Latvian plẽne (“white ashes on coals”) and Old Prussian pelanne (“ashes”).
