Inherited from Proto-Slavic *orkyta, which Pokorny connects to Ancient Greek ἄρκευθος (árkeuthos, juniper), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *h₂erkʷ- (bend).[1] Also compare Latvian ērkšķis (thorn bush).
