саан

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Ket

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Ketic *saqʌn (fault; guilty), etymology unclear. Either derived from Proto-Ketic *saq ~ *sax (weight) with Proto-Ketic *-ʌn (adjectivising suffix) appended, or derived from Proto-Yeniseian *saq ~ *saga (squirrel) with Proto-Yeniseian *-pʰan (caritive suffix) appended. For the latter potential etymology, see the Wikipedia entry Siberian fur trade for historical context, where not having squirrels pelts could mean 'being at fault'.[1][2]
