[edit]Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠰᠠᠶᠢᠳ sg (sayid, “minister”), from Middle Mongol ᠰᠠᠶᠢᠳ pl (sʾyyt /sayid/, “good”, attributive and substantive adjective). Compare Buryat һайд (hajd), Kalmyk сәәд (sääd), etc. Perhaps related to Arabic سَيِّدٌ m (sayyidun, “master; lord; sir”).
