Ket

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Inherited from Proto-Yeniseian *sim ~ *sum (if, when, preverbal irrealis particle).[1][2]

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /¹sim/, [sʲiˑm˧]

Particle

[edit]

сим (sīm)

  1. if, if only, would; preverbal subjunctive or irrealis particle

Usage notes

[edit]
  • As can be deduced by the definition, this particle сим appears before the verb in Ket sentence. For example:
    • Ат богон. (Ād bókon. “I went.” [Realis mode])
    • Ат сим богон. (Ād sīm bókon. “If only I went..., I would have went..., Had I went...” [Irrealis mode])
