Inherited from Old Ruthenian снѣ́жный (sně́žnyj), from Old East Slavic снѣжьнꙑи (sněžĭnyi), from Proto-Slavic *sněžьnъ. By surface analysis, сніг (snih) +‎ -ний (-nyj).
