[edit]Inherited from Old East Slavic сусолу (susolu), that from Proto-Slavic *sysьlъ, probably onomatopoeic of its calls; related to Bulgarian съскам (sǎskam, “I hiss”) and Old Church Slavonic свистати (svistati, “to whistle”).
