Chuvash[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Mongol ᠰᠠᠮᠰᠠ (samsa, nasal septum). Jegorov and Fedotov also compare Common Turkic *tumšuk (nose, beak), however this is dubious for phonetic reasons. EDAL reconstructs Proto-Turkic *sum-,[1] however such a word is not attested in any other Turkic language.

Noun[edit]

сӑмса (săms̬a) (plural сӑмсасем)

  1. nose
  2. beak
  3. (of animals) snout, mug, muzzle
  4. (colloquial) snot, snivel
  5. (geography) snot, snivel
  6. crust (of bread)
