From Proto-Turkic *taŋrï (god; sky, heaven). Cognate with Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (t²ŋr²i), Old Uyghur 𐾀𐽺𐽷𐽾𐽶 (tnkry), Turkish tanrı.
