Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *ťeŕďəms, borrowed from Proto-Baltic *tirdi- (whence Latvian tirt ((to) question, interrogate), Lithuanian tìrti (learn, find out; search; examine), tirdīt (badger, interrogate persistently; disturb, curse, persuade)).[1]
