From Proto-Slavic *teplъ. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian tȍpao/то̏пао, Belarusian цёплы (cjóply), Bulgarian топъл (topǎl), Czech and Slovak teplý, Lower Sorbian śopły, Upper Sorbian ćopły, Macedonian топол (topol), Polish ciepły, Russian тёплый (tjóplyj), Slovene topel and Ukrainian теплий (teplyj).
