Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠲᠩᠷᠢ (tŋri /teŋ[gä]ri/), from Middle Mongol ᠲᠩᠷᠢ (tŋri /teŋ[gä]ri/, orthographically borrowed from Old Uyghur 𐾀𐽺𐽷𐽾𐽶), from Proto-Mongolic *teŋgeri, from Proto-Turkic *teŋri.

Cognate with Buryat тэнгэри (tengeri, sky, heaven; God), Kalmyk теңгр (teñgr, sky, heaven; weather), etc. Compare also Tuvan дээр (deer, sky), Khakas тигір (tigìr, sky), Yakut таҥара (tañara, God), Southern Altai теҥери (teŋeri), Old Turkic 𐱅𐰭𐰼𐰃 (t²ŋr²i /teŋri/, sky), etc.
