Ossetian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Goes back to Proto-Iran. *paθaka-, from paθ- ‘way’; actually a “guide”. Cf. Av. paθ-, O.Ind. path-, patha- ‘road’, ‘path’, pathaka- ‘traveler’, Gr. πάτος ‘road’, ‘path’, etc.

Scythian *paθ- is the probable source of the Germanic word for ‘path’ in Ger. Pfad, Eng. path, etc.
