Inherited from Proto-Slavic *česàti (to comb, to scratch), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *késtei. Per Vasmer, cognates include Sanskrit कच्छू (kacchū, an itch, a scab), Ancient Greek κεσκέον (keskéon, oakum, tow) and Ancient Greek κέωρος (kéōros, nettle).
