From Proto-Samic *čoarvē, from Proto-Uralic *śarwe.

Related to Hungarian szarv and Finnish sarvi. Compare Skolt Sami čuäʹrvv, Kildin Sami чуэррьв (čuerr’v) and Northern Sami čoarvi.
