[edit]From Ottoman Turkish چارشاف (çârşaf, “bedsheet; large veil coveing the entire body”), from چادر شب (çâdır-ı şeb), from Persian چادر شب (čâdar-e šab).
The meaning 'act in theater' is secondary to 'theater curtain'.
Cognate with Tatar чаршау (çarşaw, “curtain”), Uzbek choyshab (“bedsheet”), Turkish çarşaf (“bedsheet, large veil”).
