Inherited from Classical Mongolian ᠡᠷᠳᠡᠨᠢ (ärdäni), from Middle Mongol [Term?], from Old Uyghur 𐽰𐽾𐽸𐽶𐽺𐽶 (ʾrlyny /⁠ärdini⁠/), 𐽰𐽾𐽸𐽰𐽺𐽶 (ʾrlʾny /⁠ärdäni⁠/, jewel), from Sogdian 𐼘𐼚𐼎 (rtn), ultimately from Sanskrit रत्न (ratna, jewel, gem, gift). Compare Tuvan эртине (ertine).
