Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finno-Permic *jäwrä, borrowed either from Proto-Balto-Slavic *jaurā (compare Lithuanian jáura (marshland, bog)) or from earlier Proto-Indo-European *yewHr-. Cognates include Finnish järvi, Northern Sami jávri, Eastern Mari ер (jer).
