Etymology

From Proto-Slavic *(j)elenь, (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *h₁el-(h₁)en- (red deer, elk). Cognate with Ancient Greek ἑλλός (hellós, deer-calf), ἔλαφος (élaphos, deer), Lithuanian elnias, Old Armenian եղն (ełn).
