From Proto-Balto-Slavic *elenias, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁el- (red deer, elk). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *(j)elenь, Ancient Greek ἔλαφος (élaphos, deer), Old Armenian եղն (ełn, hind).
