From Proto-Indo-European *h₁elh₁ēn ‎(red deer, elk). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *(j)elenь, Ancient Greek ἔλαφος ‎(élaphos, deer), Old Armenian եղն ‎(ełn, hind).
