ӕвзист
Appearance
Ossetian
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Uncertain; presumably from Alanic *ævzestæ, possibly either:
- from Proto-Sarmatian *zβēšta, from Proto-Scythian *zβēštā, from Proto-Iranian *jwayštaH, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰwayštaH, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰwey-, perhaps cognate with Proto-Slavic *gvězda (“star”), Ancient Greek φοῖβος (phoîbos, “bright, pure”);
- or borrowed from Proto-Permic *äzwäś (“silver”).
