Etymology

The origin is uncertain.

According to some, inherited from Proto-Indo-European via pre-Armenian *azgdʰ-, and cognate with Sanskrit सक्थि (sákthi, thigh, thigh-bone), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬑𐬙𐬌 (haxti, thigh), Ancient Greek ἰσχίον (iskhíon, hio-joint).

Others compare to Ancient Greek ὀσφῦς (osphûs, loins, lower part of the back) and derive both from *h₃ésth₁ (bone) grown with the determinative *-dʰ-. Alternatively, both may derive from a Mediterranean–Pontic (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 333: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "qfa-sub" is not valid.
