Old Armenian

Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Armenian *aławun +‎ (-i). Further origin is uncertain. Perhaps from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *albʰós (white). Alternatively, according to Martirosyan probably a borrowing from a Mediterranean (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "qfa-sub" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. word of the form *pl̥h₂-bʰ-ōn, reflected also in Latin palumbēs, palumbus. See also սալամբ (salamb).

Noun

աղաւնի (aławni)

  1. dove, pigeon
վայրի աղաւնիvayri aławnistock-dove, wood-pigeon, wild pigeon

Usage notes

  • This is the only Old Armenian word in which the diphthong աւ (aw) did not turn into օ (ō) before a consonant. This is probably because the word was pronounced *aɫawəni.
  • The word has two combining forms: աղաւնե- (aławne-) and աղաւնա- (aławna-).
