Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *s(e)m-eh₂- (year). The initial ա- (a-) is from the oblique stem *sm̥-h₂-ó-. Cognate with Sanskrit समा (sámā, year, season), Avestan 𐬵𐬀𐬨𐬀 (hama), Old Irish sam (summer). Related to ամառն (amaṙn).[1][2][3]
