Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

According to Martirosyan possibly a substrate word connected with անթայր ‎(antʿayr) and Ancient Greek ἄνθραξ ‎(ánthrax, charcoal).

According to Ačaṙyan, possibly borrowed from a "Caucasian" (Kartvelian?) language: compare Georgian ანთება ‎(anteba, to kindle).
