Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing, probably Middle Median because of the prothetic a-. Compare Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾxšʾd, depressed, troubled), Middle Persian [Manichaean needed] (ʾxšʾdyh, suffering), Sanskrit क्षत (kṣata, hurt). Further connections outside of Indo-Iranian uncertain.

The word is not used independently (but is found in compounds) apart from the two idioms mentioned above.
