Etymology

The original spelling is առաւաւտ (aṙawawt), from առ (aṙ) + (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Armenian *aw, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *h₂éwsōs (dawn), +‎ -աւտ (-awt).

On the other hand, Ałayan derives *aw from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *sāu-, the “pure” root of *sāu-el- (sun), but as stated by J̌ahukyan and Martirosyan this is improbable, as *sāu- is not attested in any cognate language. See also աւօտ (awōt).
