Etymology

Learned borrowing from Old Armenian ասուպ (asup), which is found only in HHB citing Albertus Magnus, several medieval Armenian translations of whom are known. Borrowed from Medieval Latin asub (“meteor”), attested also in the writings of Albertus Magnus and which the Armenian translator simply transliterated. Asub, assub is a Latinized form of Arabic أَشْهُب (ʔašhub), plural of شِهَاب (šihāb, “meteor”).

Note also Middle Armenian ասպ (asp, “comet”) in Mxitʻar Ayrivanecʻi.
