From Iranian *aspataka-, composed of *asp ‎(horse) + *tak- ‎(to run). For the constituents compare Persian اسپ ‎(asp, horse) and Middle Persian 𐭲𐭪 ‎(tak, tag, run), Persian تکیدن ‎(takīdan, to run), تک ‎(tak, run).
