Etymology[edit]

Because of the prothetic ա- ‎(a-) borrowed via Middle Median from Old Iranian *spara- ‎(shield), whence also Middle Persian spl ‎(spar), Persian سپر ‎(sipar). The form borrowed via Parthian, *սպար ‎(*spar), survives in compounds սպարակիր ‎(sparakir) and սպարափակ ‎(sparapʿak).
