From Proto-Indo-European *dl̥-, zero-grade of *del- ‎(to cleave, cut, work on timber), grown with a prothetic ա- ‎(a-) and enlarged by ‎(-j). The closest cognates are Ancient Greek δάλτος ‎(dáltos, writing tablet) and Czech dláha ‎(splint). For other cognates see Latvian dalīt.
