From Proto-Indo-European *dl̥h₁-, zero-grade of *delh₁- (to cleave, cut, work on timber), grown with a prothetic ա- (a-) and enlarged by (-j); the closest cognates are Ancient Greek δάλτος (dáltos, writing tablet) and Czech dláha (splint).[1][2]
