Etymology

Two possibilities exist.

Diakonoff argues for an Urartian borrowing; compare Urartian 𒅈𒍢𒁉𒉌 (ar-ṣi-bi-ni /Arṣibini/), attested as a name of a horse, possibly meaning ‘Eagle’, and the theonym 𒀭𒅈𒍢𒁁𒁲𒉌𒂊 (dar-ṣi-be-di-ni-e /Arṣibedini/).[1]

On the other hand, Martirosyan and Ačaṙyan consider the word to be of native origin, inherited from Proto-Indo-European *h₂r̥ǵipyós, with Sanskrit ऋजिप्य (ṛjipyá, darting along) (an epithet of श्येन (śyená, eagle)), Avestan 𐬆𐬭𐬆𐬰𐬌𐬟𐬌𐬌𐬋.𐬞𐬀𐬭𐬆𐬥𐬀 (ərəzifiiō.parəna, having eagle-feathers), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hr̥ȷ́ipyás, as cognates. In this case the Urartian word is a borrowing from Proto-Armenian; the element di- in 𒀭𒅈𒍢𒁁𒁲𒉌𒂊 (dar-ṣi-be-di-ni-e /Arṣibedini/) could then be borrowed from Old Armenian դի-ք (di-kʻ, gods).[2][3][4]
