Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Western Middle Iranian *ahramarh(ī) from an Iranian compound *ādra-(h)mr̥θya- (esteemed lowly, despised) from the phrase *ādram (h)mar- (to keep in low esteem, to despise). For the first part compare Avestan 𐬁𐬛𐬭𐬀 (ādra, low, inferior), Sanskrit आध्र (ādhrá, poor, destitute, indigent, weak). The second part is the ultimate source of համարեմ (hamarem, to consider).
