Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Western Middle Iranian *ahramarh(ī) from an Iranian compound *ādra-(h)mr̥θya- ‎(esteemed lowly, despised) from the phrase *ādram (h)mar- ‎(to keep in low esteem, to despise). For the first part compare Avestan [script needed] ‎(ādra-, low, inferior), Sanskrit आध्र ‎(ādhrá, poor, destitute, indigent, weak). The second part is the ultimate source of համարեմ ‎(hamarem, to consider).
