Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Middle Median *arītaxōδ from an old Iranian compound *rīta-xauda-(face cover). For the first part compare Sogdian ryt(*rīt, *rēt, face). The second part is from Iranian *xaud-(to cover), whence Old Persian 𐎧𐎢𐎭𐎠(xaudā-, hat) and Old Armenian խոյր(xoyr).
