From Old Armenian ափիոն ‎(apʿion) (in Galen), from Middle Persian [script needed] ‎(apiyōn), from Ancient Greek ὄπιον ‎(ópion). The forms աֆիոն ‎(afion), աֆիոն ‎(afion) are from Arabic أفيون ‎(ʾafyūn) or Persian افیون ‎(afyun).
