Middle Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain. An inheritance from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵós (birch) is phonologically difficult.

Compare Proto-Kartvelian *bard- (undergrowth, brush, bushes), Romanian brad (fir; pine), Aramaic בְּרֹותָא(bərōṯā, cypress).
