Etymology[edit]

A derivative of Proto-Indo-European *bʰrHǵ- ‎(birch). Cognates include Sanskrit भूर्ज ‎(bhūrja, a species of birch), Ossetian бӕрз ‎(bærz), Proto-Germanic *birkijǭ, Common Slavic *berza ‎(birch).

Proto-Kartvelian *bard- ‎(undergrowth, brush, bushes) may be borrowed from Armenian.
