Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Similar words for globular objects are found in many languages: compare Latin pustula, bulla, Ancient Greek βομβυλίς (bombulís, water bubbles), Lithuanian pampti (to swell), bumbalas (knob, bladder). Related to փոշտ (pʻošt) and perhaps առաւուշտ (aṙawušt).
