According to Ačaryan, inherited from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *gʰerdʰ- (to enclose with a fence) +‎ -աստան (-astan). According to others, borrowed from the (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Lua error in Module:parameters at line 290: Parameter 1 should be a valid language or etymology language code; the value "ira" is not valid. See WT:LOL and WT:LOL/E. descendant of the same Proto-Indo-European root.
