From Middle Iranian *dānak, from Old Iranian *dāna-ka-, from the Proto-Iranian root *dā- ‎(to cut), whence also դան ‎(dan) and նրան ‎(nran). Compare Sanskrit दान ‎(dāna, cutting off), Persian داس ‎(dās, sickle), داره ‎(dāra, scythe, sickle).
