Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

An Iranian borrowing. Compare Manichaean Parthian dʾdbr(dādβar, judge), Middle Persian dʾtwbl(dādwar, judge), Persian داور(dâvar, judge). For the etymon of these see դատ(dat). Reshaped under the influence of the Armenian suffix -ւոր(-wor).
