Etymology[edit]

The original spelling is դրաւշ (drawš), from Middle Iranian. Compare Middle Persian dlpš (drafš, banner), Manichaean Parthian drfš (drafš, banner), Persian درفش (dirafš, banner, flag), Ossetian тырыса (tyrysa, flag). Through Proto-Indo-European these are related to Sanskrit द्रप्स (drapsá, flag), द्रापि (drāpí, mantle, gown), Italian drappo, French drapeau, English drape, Ancient Greek δρέπω (drépō, I pluck), Russian драпать (drapatʹ), etc.
