From Avestan *𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬋⸱𐬞𐬁𐬥𐬀 (*zaṇgō pāna) or Middle Persian *zngpʾn' (zangpān, greaves). The first part is Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬋 (zaṇgō, shank) = Middle Persian zng (zang, shin, shank), both from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu. The second part is Avestan 𐬞𐬁𐬥𐬀 (pāna-) = Middle Persian -pʾn' (-pān, -bān, -keeper), whence also -պան (-pan).
