From Middle Iranian *zang(a)-pān. For the constituents compare Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬧𐬔𐬋 ‎(zaṇgō, shank), Middle Persian zng ‎(zang, shin, shank) (both from Proto-Indo-European *ǵónu), and Avestan 𐬞𐬁𐬥𐬀 ‎(pāna-), Middle Persian -pʾn' ‎(-pān, -bān, -keeper), whence also -պան ‎(-pan).
