From Classical Syriac ܬܪܓܡܢܐ ‎(targmānāʼ, translator), of native Semitic origin. Compare Akkadian [script needed] ‎(targumannu), Arabic ترجمان ‎(turjumān). The Semitic word has spread into many languages.
