Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Old Armenian թեզան (tʻezan).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

թեզան (tʻezan)

  1. (weaving) the weft, the transverse threads which are woven across to make cloth using the warp as a base
  2. long sleeve

Declension[edit]

Old Armenian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

The origin is uncertain.

The derivations from Proto-Indo-European *tek- (to weave) or *(s)tegʰ- (to stitch) are usually rejected because Armenian -զ- (-z-) requires *-ǵʰ-. Petersson connects with թիզ (tʻiz, span) and reconstructs a Proto-Indo-European *teǵʰ- (to stretch) for both, remarking, however, that there are no cognates in other languages, apart from, perhaps, Russian таза́ть (tazátʹ, to scold, rebuke).
