Etymology[edit]

The word is attested only once and is derived from Middle Persian *hwlʾk' ‎(xvarāk). Compare modern Persian خوراک ‎(xvarāk, xorāk, food). These derive from Proto-Iranian *hwar- ‎(to eat, consume), whence another borrowing խորտիկ ‎(xortik); see it.
