Etymology

The origin is uncertain. Martirosyan interprets as “the sign of the Sky/Thunder-god”, assimilated from *տիածան (*tiacan), from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Armenian *Tiw (Sky-god, Thunder-god), compare տիւ (tiw), -ա- (-a-) + *ծան- (*can-, sign, omen), of the same origin as ճանաչեմ (čanačʻem).
