Old Armenian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Through assimilation from earlier *ծանաչեմ (*canačʻem), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵn̥h₃sḱéti, from *ǵneh₃- (to know).

Possible traces of the meaning ‘sign, omen’ can be seen in ծիածան (ciacan) and ծանակ (canak); for this meaning compare Russian знак (znak).
