According to Ačaṙean, derived from Proto-Indo-European *gayd- and connected with Lithuanian gaidrùs and giẽdras (clear, bright, serene), gaidrà and giedrà (clear, serene weather), Latvian dzidrums (clarity, serenity), gaiss (air), gaišs (clear, light, bright), gaisma (light) and Old Prussian gaylis (white). According to some also connected with Ancient Greek φαιδρός (phaidrós, bright, shining), φαίδιμος (phaídimos, shining, splendid), φαιός (phaiós, dark, grey), etc.
