Martirosyan tentatively suggests derivation from Proto-Indo-European *gʷetu- ‎(resin) with Old Irish beithe ‎(box-tree), Middle Welsh bedw ‎(birches), Welsh bedwen ‎(birch), Latin betula (from Gaulish), Sanskrit जतु ‎(jatu, gum, lac), Persian ژد ‎(žad, gum), Latin bitūmen, Old English cwidu (English cud) as cognates.
